Annual mosquito control program underway

Mosquito season is here and Gloucester County has already begun its yearly effort to control the insects.

Over the past few weeks, crews have been larviciding in a number of ditches, placing chemical briquettes that are very effective when wet, according to Wes McIntyre, who heads the county’s mosquito control program.

Gloucester provides mosquito control services in designated parts of the county. There, residents pay an ad valorem tax of 1 cent per $100 of assessed property value for the service.

McIntyre said that all of the mosquito control districts are regularly checked by landing counts by the control drivers and by several mosquito traps. When warranted, mosquito control spraying will begin for the season. The county has two spray trucks and two part-time drivers at the ready to begin driving through the designated areas.
