A new restaurant recently opened in a building at Glenns where another eatery had operated for many years. Josh Hollandsworth of Glenns, owner and chef of Ann’s Diner, said that he opened his new restaurant on March 11.
The building, located on Route 17 at Glenns, previously housed Ann’s Family Dining. That business was owned for many years by his grandmother, Anne Hollandsworth, who also owned several restaurants in Gloucester and Mathews. More recently, that business was owned by Josh’s brother, Justin Hollandsworth of Gloucester, who had rented the dining facility at Glenns from Josh and then relocated it to Shoppes at Gloucester south of the village.
Josh has owned the building for a number of years, heading that restaurant for eight years before leasing it to his brother for a while, and then deciding to open another restaurant at the upper county location, which seats approximately 50 customers. He recently installed new kitchen equipment.
Ann’s Diner is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Breakfast specialties include omelets, French toast, pancakes, scrapple and corned beef hash, Hollandsworth said.
Lunch offerings include specialty hamburgers such as the Cheesy Western Burger with a yellow relish and fried egg, and a Southern Chey Burger, named for Hollandsworth’s daughter, Cheyenne, which features baked ham, barbecue sauce, Swiss cheese and pickles. Cheyenne, 15, is a sophomore at Gloucester High School and a member of the school’s field hockey team.
Other lunch items include a crab cake sandwich, flounder sandwich, freshly-cut chicken prepared to order, and a selection of salads.
The dinner menu features hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, pork chops and prime rib (on Friday and Saturday nights only). Homemade desserts rotate, such as carrot cake and banana pudding. Specials are offered daily, Hollandsworth said.
Ann’s Diner is happy to accommodate a guest’s special dietary needs, he said, and all dishes and sauces are prepared on site.
Hollandsworth heads a staff of five. Allison Taylor of Glenns, is the restaurant manager. Originally from Glenns, she is a graduate of Gloucester High School and has more than six years’ restaurant experience.
Josh is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, a culinary institute, earning a master’s degree in 2002. He said he has more than 20 years’ restaurant experience and enjoys all types of food preparation, with an emphasis on good taste.
