ANNE MICKELBOROUGH WROTEN SOUTH

Anne Mickelborough Wroten South, 91, of Mathews, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at her home. She was born to John Albert and Elizabeth Gayle Mickelborough on December 18, 1934. Anne was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, the UMW, and the Mathews County Woman’s Club. Her hobby was knitting for the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters & Sons, and the Peninsula Cancer Institute. In 1975, her husband, Mason, became a Panama Canal pilot, and they were in Panama for four years. Upon returning to Mathews, they bought a recreational motor home and traveled for approximately five months a year for 23 years, making many friends from the USA and Canada. They enjoyed a fun and happy life with their many families and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her first husband, Jesse Lee Wroten, Navy Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class; daughter, Nancy Ann Wroten; second husband, Capt. Mason Terrett South; daughter, Vickie South Johnson; her son-in-law, Peter Nathan Ochsenfeld; granddaughter, Lisa Cherie Ochsenfeld of Weslaco, Texas; her brother, John Albert Mickelborough, Bohannon, Va., and sister-in-law, Doris Mickelborough of Bohannon.

She leaves to cherish her memories her brother, Garnett Lee Mickelborough of Bohannon; daughter, Faye Wroten Ochsenfeld (formerly of Weslaco, Texas), Mathews, and four grandchildren, Peter Mason Ochsenfeld (Aimee Mingone) of Hampton, Va.; James Alan Ochsenfeld (Amie) of Leesburg, Ga.; Elizabeth Julia Taylor (Matt Richardson) of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Meghan Taylor Merron of Chesapeake, Va. She leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service at Central United Methodist Church will be conducted by Pastor Rebecca Rumburg on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private and at a later date, as Anne’s body will be donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Program for anatomical and scientific study, teaching, and research. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anne’s memory to Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 297, Mathews, Va. 23109, the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Mathews, Va. 23109, or to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 1130, Mathews, Va. 23109.
