120 YEARS AGOThursday, Oct. 4, 1906from the Mathews Journal Educational rally day: At the Tabernacle, 18th, Beginning at 11 o’clock a.m. Mr. J.D. Eggleston Jr., the superintendent of schools, with others, are expected to be present and address the meeting in the interest of the public schools. Mr. E.H. Russell, district superintendent, will also be present. Teachers with the children of all schools of the county are urged by the county board to be on time with the division superintendent and trustees. Each will bring lunches as there will be an all-day meeting by the County Committee. 110 YEARS AGOThursday, Sept. 28, 1916from the Mathews Journal Blakes is quite a dull place now, as most of the larger boys and girls who have not gone away to work are in school.The young people of this and neighboring communities have recently organized an Epworth League at Mathews Chapel Church.
