Advent wreath; live nativity on Sunday

For the second year, Abingdon Episcopal Church is adding brief Sunday afternoon worship services outdoors to light the candles for each week of Advent. In this case, the Advent wreath is a huge ring of pine straw on the ground, and it is topped with holiday greenery. Four cressets represent the candles. Above, approximately 35 people attended the Dec. 5 service, which was followed by a youth-friendly hot dog roast and a visit from St. Nicholas. The third cresset was lit on the giant outdoor Advent wreath on the ground at Abingdon Episcopal Church this past Sunday. This coming Sunday at 4 p.m., the fourth cresset will be lit, and there will be a live nativity scene. This family service will give children the opportunity to interact with the animals in a manger setting. From 5-6 p.m., people are also invited to drive by the holy scene and reflect upon the season.
