Administration takes heat for snow cleanup

Mathews County’s administration staff took some heat during Tuesday’s board of supervisors meeting. Supervisor Charles Ingram criticized the fact that sidewalks were not cleaned after the recent snowstorm and that he had to walk in the street with some visitors to get to a building.

“Allen T used to take care of that,” he said, speaking of former building official Allen T. Ward.

County Administrator Mindy Moran said that the parking lot had been cleared, but that there are currently only three employees in the building official’s office, which handles such matters.

“We used to have more, plus inmate labor,” said Moran. “It was a bad week, and we did the best we could.”

Current building official Jamie Wilks explained that the snow came on a holiday weekend and that he only had one person to handle the work. None of the contractors contacted wanted to shovel snow, he said.
