About 50 boats take part in Governor’s Cup Regatta

The annual Virginia Governor’s Cup Regatta drew about 50 boats for two days of racing out of the Ware River Yacht Club last weekend. 

After a seven-race series, the Governor’s Cup was awarded to Buccaneer sailors Jeff Neurauter and Carrie Quinn from the Potomac River Sailing Association. Buccaneers made up the largest boat class competing in the regatta.

The Gloucester County Chamber of Commerce Trophy, awarded to the top junior sailor in the event, went to Laser Radial skipper Henry Eley of Hampton Yacht Club. 

The Congressman’s Cup, awarded for exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship, went to Gordon and Kerri Stokes from the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. Del. Keith Hodges (R-Urbanna) was on hand to help present individual class awards as well as the perpetual trophies. In conjunction with the Governor’s Cup, the WRYC hosted its annual Optimist Regatta for young sailors. This event drew 15 boats that competed in eight races.
