Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Inc. kicks off 2012 fund drive

Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Inc. recently launched its fund drive for 2012. The goal is $100,000.

Last year, the squad missed its fund drive goal of $100,000, according to AVFR public information officer Robert Parlett, as a tight economy kept donations to $92,201.

More than 8,000 solicitation letters were mailed last week to residences and businesses in the organization’s service area, which stretches from White Marsh through the southern end of Gloucester County. "The money raised is used for replacement and new equipment, training and operational expenses," Parlett said. The fund drive will continue through March.

Gloucester County supplies approximately 80 percent of the squad’s operating expenses, and the bulk of the money for new ambulances and fire vehicles, Parlett said. The balance comes from fund drive donations, he said, along with memorials and grants.
