The Middle Peninsula AARP TaxAide group has begun its tax services for 2023 federal and Virginia tax preparation, providing free help to those in need throughout February, March and April at Gloucester Library, Bethany United Methodist Church at Gloucester Point and the Cryer Center in Locust Hill.
Work on individual tax returns at all three sites will be done by appointment only. Appointments for the Gloucester Library, Main Street Center, can be made at http://tinyurl.com/Taxaide-Gloucester or in person by TaxAide volunteers at the Gloucester Library Community Room.
Appointments can be made at Gloucester Library on the following dates: Feb. 10, 11, 13, 17, 18, 24, 25 and 27; March 3, 6, 13, 17, 18, 20, 24, 25 and 27, and April 3, 7, 8, 10, 14, 15 and 17.
Library personnel will have information on how you can make an appointment but are unable to make appointments. Because of limited availability of counselors this year, returns with itemized deductions (long form) or original returns for tax years prior to 2022 will not be prepared at Gloucester Library.
Bethany United Methodist Church will take appointments for every Wednesday from Feb. 1 to April 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments must be made in person by TaxAide volunteers on the dates taxes are prepared. Do not contact church personnel for information or appointments. The Cryer Center will take appointments for most Wednesdays.
It is necessary when you come for your appointment at all locations to bring all your tax documents for 2022, photo IDs for the taxpayer and spouse, Social Security cards for taxpayers listed on the return and dependents, banking information for direct deposit, and last year’s tax return if available.
Those seeking help are asked to arrive about 15 minutes prior to their appointment to complete the required paperwork.
Depending on volunteer availability and the complexity of your return, TaxAide volunteers will either complete your return in a single face-to-face session on the day of your appointment or by scanning your documents for volunteers to complete at home. If your return is scanned, you will need to return about a week later to sign and finalize your tax return.

The TaxAide group is always looking for volunteers to help with tax preparation, client intake, technology and administration. Training is sponsored by AARP and the IRS and one-on-one mentoring is provided.
“It’s a great way to give back to the community and learn to do your own taxes,” a release stated. If interested in volunteering, leave a message at 804-654-1407.
