A special honor

Mathews resident Kevin Stewart had the honor of escorting Tyne Berlanga, granddaughter of President Gerald R. Ford, onto the platform for Saturday’s christening of the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford at Newport News Shipbuilding. The carrier, named after the 38th President of the United States, is the first ship of the next-generation class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and will feature a new nuclear power plant, electromagnetic catapults, an enhanced flight deck capable of increased aircraft sortie rates and more. Stewart, a pipefitter for the shipyard, has worked there for 37 years. Photo courtesy of Chris Oxley, Newport News Shipbuilding
