A school’s way of helping

There are many ways children can help the animals at the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society. Hold a bake sale, car wash, or yard sale and donate the proceeds. Organize a supply drive to collect the items that the shelter needs most. Make fleece blankets for bedding for the animals. Or just come in to the shelter to play and visit with the animals.

Gloucester’s Achilles Elementary School came up with a special way to donate to the shelter animals. The school’s Student Council Association talked about fundraising ideas for their group and came up with quite a unique idea.

The students wanted to recycle their old crayons, so they melted them down into heart shapes then sold the hearts for $1 each. The council members took a vote to decide which organization should receive their donation. The children raised $383.47 and donated it all to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society.
