A reminder for hunters

With hunting season in full swing, it’s important for hunters to remember some of the laws that are designed to protect both them and non-hunters alike. One of the more popular hunting tactics in our area involves the use of dogs as runners.

According to a release from Gloucester County’s Community Engagement and Public Information, east of the Blue Ridge Parkway, dog running is perfectly legal.

It is important to remember, however, that according to Gloucester County Ordinance, all dogs must have a valid county dog tag on at all times. In Mathews, according to county code, tags may temporarily be removed while lawfully hunting, during lawful hunting season. 

Another law to remember is that hunters can go onto private property to retrieve their dogs, only if the hunter is unarmed, and does not drive their vehicle onto the property unless given permission.
