‘A rebirth’: Mathews-built workboat Linda Carol is saved

The Mathews-built workboat the Linda Carol is back on the water and looking better than ever. Currently docked at York Haven Marina in Poquoson, the boat is registered in Bavon, and owner Bill Mullis, a Mathews native and Gloucester resident, plans to keep it that way.

Dave Rollins of York Haven Marina in Poquoson has spent the past two years lovingly repairing, renovating and upgrading the Linda Carol, and she’s a sight to behold. The 60-foot boat glistens under a coat of brilliant West System epoxy, and her wood trim shines like polish. A new mast, handmade of juniper, stands tall and proud above the deck.

But the surface appearance is only part of the story. Over the past 22 months, Rollins has rebuilt the boat from the bottom up. He fashioned all new ribs and deck beams out of white cedar from the Dismal Swamp, so that all are now new except for the chunk stern and first few bottom side boards, which were made of heart pine from Mathews County and were “in amazingly...
