A quilt for Dr. Reed

Bonnie Betz of Mathews, shown at right, presented a new quilt, handmade and hand-appliqued, to the Walter Reed Birthplace, Bellamy during the second annual Birthday at the Birthplace held Sept. 10. Her pattern was based on mid-19th century designs, appropriate to the birthplace. The piece replaces a daisy-patterned quilt acquired in 1973 by the Joseph Bryan Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, which then owned the birthplace. The Fairfield Foundation assumed preservation responsibility at the home in 2019 and since then Bay Quilters member Cheryl Karow has worked to create textiles and curtains to represent the period. Betz volunteered to make the quilt.
