A few shad are being caught as fish season opens

110 YEARS AGOThursday, March 14, 1912from the Mathews Journal

Though the fish season was expected to be late this year on account of the severe winter which also prevented the fishermen from making their preparations for the catch on as large a scale as usual, it seems at present that the run may come at any time. For some time herring in small quantities have been caught, the first instance heard of here being by Mr. Wendall White, of Dixie.

More lately reports from New Point state that several parties have captured a few shad, among the number being Messrs. Otis Diggs and Gilbert Hudgins.

Miss Myrtle Forrest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Forrest and Mr. J. Walter Hurst, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hurst, all well-known residents of Tabernacle, were married by Rev. George Gowen at his apartments in Mathews C.H., Tuesday night.
