A delightful ride was given in a naphtha launch on Saturday evening last by Mr. Sam Hudgins and Rodney Brooks. A party of 35 left Mr. Calvin Handy’s landing on Pepper Creek and headed for North River. After going up the river as far as Dixondale, we turned our course and started back. Went to Taliaferro’s wharf, made a landing and walked up Gloucester … a distance of two or three miles. On our way back we were encountered by a large black dog. He gave us all a scare, but we soon got over that, as no harm was done, except to shake the ladies’ skirts and give us all a run. In walking through the woods we came across a grapevine. After 35 sampled them there were hardly enough left to tell the tale. We reached the launch about dark, and while waiting for the moon to rise, we ate our lunch and amused ourselves in various ways. We reached home at 11, much pleased with our trip. Submitted by One of the Party.
