A day of history

Several members of the Capt. Sally Tompkins chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy enjoyed a day celebrating American history in Richmond on Sunday. They began their day at Shockoe Cemetery, the second oldest cemetery in Richmond and were led on a private tour where they were told stories about several of the people interred there. Here, from left, Diana Swenson, Marilyn Iglesias, Gwen Wood, Martha and Casey Frame and Becky Morgan pay respects at the grave of Elizabeth Van Lew, arguably one of the most successful Union spies in the Civil War. Also on the itinerary was a reenactment of Patrick Henry’s famous “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech at St John’s Church.
