A child’s secret stash uncovered during renovation work

Courthouse Restaurant owner Doug Hibbs was in the middle of a renovation to an upstairs part of the Gloucester restaurant building when something a bit unusual was uncovered.

Hidden in the floorboards of his home above the Main Street restaurant, workers came across a jar in a small dug-out hole.

In the jar, Hibbs found three coins, one dated to 1988, and a scrap of newspaper dated June 17, 1933. He theorizes the jar was someone’s secret stash, perhaps belonging to some child who had left it there to hide things. He said the mystery of why the jar was there is what excites him about the find.

Hibbs said he plans to replace the old jar with one of his own.
