A busy holiday weekend is coming up

This coming weekend will be a busy one on the Middle Peninsula, as the true beginning of the holiday season ushers in a variety of activities for all ages. The weekend includes the hallmark Gloucester County Citizens’ Christmas and Holiday Parade, which will step off at 3 p.m. Saturday along Main Street from Main Street Center.

Gloucester’s Tree Lighting featuring carols sung by Botetourt and Bethel elementary school students will begin in the court circle following the parade at 5 o’clock.

The Mathews Community Christmas Tree Lighting, sponsored by the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center and the Mathews High School Art Department, is also scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday on the historic court green. MHS art teacher Rachel Morris said the theme of this year’s tree will be “Doves of Peace.” There will be music by the BayBells handbell choir and the Salem United Methodist Church Children’s Choir.
