A Mathews County deputy was charged last week with one count each of driving under the influence and following too closely following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of John Clayton Memorial Highway and Buckley Hall Road. According to a statement from the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred on Monday, Sept. 28, at around 3 p.m., and involved a county-owned vehicle driven by 41-year-old Deputy Jacob Jones of Mathews. No injuries were reported in the accident. In a statement shared on social media, Sheriff April Edwards said that when her office became aware that the accident involved an employee, she immediately requested that the Virginia State Police respond to the scene and conduct an independent investigation. “We believe that this was the appropriate course of action to ensure the circumstances were investigated objectively and independently of the sheriff’s office,” she said.
