We are in the midst of National Newspaper Week, an annual observance by the Newspaper Association Managers now marking its 86th year.In today’s world of social media, where everyone is his or her own reporter and information seems to be everywhere, all at once, some have questioned the need for newspapers.We have several answers to that question.First of all, items appearing in a newspaper like the Gazette-Journal have been vetted and checked out. Much of what is posted on social media is not, as many have found out to their detriment. Despite all the cries of “fake news” in recent years, newspapers like ours do our best to present the “real news” to the public and, in case we do get something wrong, we do our best to make it right, running a correction and taking other action to make sure that the public is aware of what the real story is.Secondly, small weekly papers like ours try their best to keep up with all the news in the community.
