U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Mathews Flotilla 66 presented a boating safety class on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad in Hudgins. Six students received their lifetime boating education certificate, satisfying the state requirements that all operators of personal watercraft and motor boats of 10 horsepower or greater pass an approved boating safety education course. The course, titled “Navigating Virginia’s Waters,” is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources covering topics such as the basics of Navigating the Waterways, Requirements of Virginia Law, Boating Emergencies, and Fun in Water Sports the Right Way. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the all-volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard. Mathews Flotilla 66, which recently celebrated its 75th year, continues to carry on its primary mission of promoting recreational boating safety through public education classes, free vessel examinations and participation in community events.
