To celebrate turning 10, homeschooled fourth grader Maggie Speer of Gloucester has decided to raise $1,000 for the DeGood Foundation, the Gloucester program partner for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. “She likes books,” said Katie Speer, Maggie’s seven-year-old sister. “She likes Dolly.” For more than 25 years, the Imagination Library has given a book in the mail to children every month from birth until their fifth birthday. Gloucester’s program began in June 2023 and since then over 27,000 books have been mailed to Gloucester children. The county currently has 865 children enrolled in the program, which is 47 percent of all residents under five. “I turned 10 Saturday,” said Maggie. “We already raised $1,000 in less than a week, so now we’re shooting for $2,000.” The $1,000 would be enough to mail 65 Gloucester children free, age-appropriate books in the mail every month for an entire year.
