Editor, Gazette- Journal: I’ve read multiple complaints that the Virginia Constitution needs to be “protected” because the rights the amendments protect are already legal in Virginia. “Legal” can be easily changed. I remember when it was illegal to cohabit. You could be arrested for living together in a romantic relationship with someone you weren’t married to. That 1877 law was not repealed until 2013! I remember when it was illegal in Virginia to buy laundry soap (and a long list of other things related to working) on Sundays because Sunday was a “day of rest” according to the Bible. These “Blue Laws” were declared unconstitutional by the Virginia Supreme Court in September of 1988. The Virginia Constitution doesn’t need protection; human rights do need to be protected. The proposed amendments have all undergone the rigorous requirements of the Virginia Constitution and passed solidly to reach this ballot.
