The Gazette-Journal’s article on Dolly Parton’s appearance at the Li’l Ole Opry in Mathews 50 years ago drew a happy response from another lady of the same name. Dolly Thompson of Gloucester recalled that she went to the show with a member of the Farmer family, which has always been involved in Opry operation. “I went backstage with all of them and got to talk to her,” Thompson said. “I said, ‘Hi, I’m so glad to meet you. My name is Dolly as well.’” She said the singer was happy and smiling to hear of the shared name, and local Dolly took in her splendid, sequined appearance. “My eyes dropped down” below Parton’s neck, and local Dolly said to star Dolly, “that’s where it stops.” “She just yahooed,” said Dolly Thompson. “She was very sincere. She was what she was,” and her gracious reception created a warm and lasting memory....
