Editor, Gazette-Journal: Before we vote on changing the Virginia Constitution, we should perhaps review some history. Back in the 1850s, a political party known as the “Know Nothings” won the midterms of 1854. They were, in a nutshell, against certain immigrants (mainly Irish and German), Catholic influence and many other traditional societal norms. Then they lost the presidential election of 1856 to Democrat James Buchanan and were never heard from again. Not to worry though, the Republican Party is formed in 1854 and Honest Abe is its first president in 1860. Just a word here: the Republican Party will evolve into a conservative doctrine while the Democratic Party will evolve into liberalism or unlimited behavior. Today, we have the “Know Nothings” of 2026 we might call the “Euphemism Party” (aka Democratic). Democratic? How so?
