Editor, Gazette-Journal: The term “Medicare for All” is being bantered around a lot. What does that really mean? The obvious answer hidden behind that soft phrase is government health care. Medicare is a government-controlled health program; Medicare for all is government-controlled heath care for everyone. No choice. A huge problem with this idea is that current Medicare for seniors has already been paid for by its recipients. How would a new plan be funded? Taxes. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates a cost between $1.5 trillion to $3 trillion annually. That breaks down to $15,000 to $20,000 per taxpayer. We will get higher taxes and lower care. This is proven in Canada, England, and the American Veterans Administration. In Canada, the wait time for a hip replacement is six months.
