Historic Christ Church in Weems in Lancaster County will host the annual John H. Hunt II Chesapeake History Forum on Saturday, Oct. 17. The program will commemorate the 350th anniversary of Bacon’s Rebellion, the armed uprising in the Virginia colony from 1676 to 1677, led by the wealthy planter Nathaniel Bacon against colonial Governor Sir William Berkeley. Historian and thespian Dr. Amy Stallings will portray Lady Frances Berkeley, the wife of Virginia’s royal governor. In a compelling first-person performance, Lady Berkeley composes a letter to her husband while guiding the audience through the recent political upheavals that left Jamestown in ashes and raised questions about whether King Charles would offer justice to Sir William Berkeley and clear him of accusations of wrongdoing.
