Dr. Dorothy Cooke will present, “African American History: Glimpse of the Past,” on Sunday in the colonial courthouse, beginning at 2 p.m. “It’s focusing on African American history and culture in Gloucester,” said Historic Resources Supervisor Robert Kelly of the Gloucester Museum of History. This event coincides with the historical programming for the 375th anniversary of Gloucester County. “We want to make sure that all of our history is commemorated and shared,” added Kelly. The program will trace the development of African American life in Gloucester, highlighting the central role of religion, the struggles to secure education and create new opportunities, and the rise of local business ventures. Cooke will explore the black-owned businesses and homes once located near the court circle and along Lemon Lane, showcase select landmarks and Heritage Trail sites, and highlight notable individuals whose stories and contributions are a vital part of Gloucester’s history.
