Editor, Gazette-Journal: September is Healthy Aging Month, an opportunity to remind our neighbors that aging well is determined by much more than what happens inside a doctor’s office. For our older neighbors, true health relies heavily on social factors like nutrition and human connection. This issue hits close to home. Four of Virginia’s five oldest counties by median age sit directly within Bay Aging’s service area. With over 34 percent of our local population aged 60 or older, regional demand for structural support is intense. Living in rural areas puts older adults at higher risk for food insecurity and chronic isolation. These are dangerous threats to physical wellness.
