Twenty-five years ago today, still breathing in the ashes and the scenes of horror from the Twin Towers and Pentagon struck by terrorists a week earlier, Americans really did not know what was coming next. It is unlikely they stopped to give much thought to that day’s main event: for September 17 is Constitution Day. It was in 2001, and it is today. The day of terror and the stately observation of Constitution Day may seem to have little connection … but stay with us. We are proud of saying that this is a nation under the rule of law. Various partisans accuse the other side of breaching the law. Courts generally work it out … not always instantly, but in the due course of time. The Constitution bends, it changes, and so far, it has not broken.
