“It started as a hobby but turned into a business,” said Mary Pair, owner of Sweet Mary’s Sweets and Savories located at Dutton. The Pairs moved from New Kent to Mathews in 2016. By 2020 Mary decided to retire after 40 years as supervisor of nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. In less than a year, Mary said she became bored. “My husband Ken was still working as were all of my friends.” In 2021 Sweet Treats Sweets and Savories entered the culinary world. “Ken had bought a building in the Dutton area which he had planned to open as his office. It became my kitchen. It’s just about a 20-minute drive from our home at Diggs.” Mary learned the art of cookery from her mother who always cooked from scratch.
