Letter: Vote Yes on sales tax referendum

Editor, Gazette-Journal: Voters in Mathews have quite a few items to think about for the fast-approaching election as we come together to decide what’s best for us as individuals, what’s best for our community, and what’s best for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The issues are many, but I ask you to focus your attention on the 1 percent tax referendum for Mathews County. As a retired educator, I share my thoughts regarding the importance of having safe, energy-efficient, and attractive facilities for our children, staff/faculty members, as well as for community use. This tax referendum will help us do just that. The 1 percent tax is levied only on prepared food and retail sales, not groceries, prescription drugs or fuel. I truly believe most of our citizens and visitors alike will support this referendum once they understand it supports Mathews Schools.
