On September 11, 2001, I was working at Newport News Shipbuilding. We had just moved into our new building earlier in the year, and I was listening to the radio using my headphones. Suddenly, the radio did an alert tone, and stated that a plane had just flown into one of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. Thinking this was an accidental collision, I didn’t pay it much attention until a short time later, another alert tone stated that a second plane had flown into the second tower. The radio stated that this appeared to be a terrorist attack. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the towers had collapsed with police, firefighters and EMS in the buildings during the collapse, trying to save others. Being a volunteer at the time with the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, this hit me hard, as those were my brothers and sisters who were trapped or killed in the rubble from the collapse of the twin towers.
