Of all the places around the world called Gloucester, including all of those which will celebrate Gloucester Day virtually and in unison on Saturday, none will have an occasion more special than will Gloucester County, Virginia. For on this day, the county’s people will gather along Main Street to celebrate Gloucester County’s 375th anniversary. Among communities in the United States of America, few are older. Few have been so close to the action. And probably, not many have aged as gracefully as our Gloucester, still a desirable place to live. Anniversary occasions usually prompt us to look back through our files for some facts, to provide a framework for the celebrations. One “fact,” that of establishment in 1651, is not quite set in stone, our clippings show. Gloucester was originally part of York County which covered a much larger area than it does today.
