Dr. Max Edelson, professor of history at the University of Virginia, will speak at the Watermen’s Museum, Yorktown, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. His topic is “The Search for Headwaters: Mapping River Exploration in Early Virginia.” He will discuss efforts of the first English colonists at Roanoke Island in 1585 and Jamestown in 1607 to locate the headwaters of coastal rivers. Instead of the gold and northwest passage they hoped to locate, they found instead mountainous river sources and encountered indigenous people, a release said.
