A 431-acre parcel adjacent to the Rosewell ruins, acquired in 2005 for the future Middle Peninsula State Park, remains undeveloped and has been absorbed into Machicomoco State Park, Hayes, which opened in 2021. A master plan for Machicomoco State Park was approved in February 2026 and tags the land originally designated as the Middle Peninsula State Park as Machicomoco’s “Western Unit.” State parks are operated by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, which approved the plan. Both park properties have extensive waterfront on York River. Both were originally homelands for the Powhatan confederacy and, in colonial times, were part of Rosewell plantation. The master plan calls for minimal construction in the Western Unit, with a timeline of 30 years, in three 10-year phases.
