The Mathews High School volleyball program opened its regular season on Monday, with the varsity Lady Devils already in mid-season form as they swept the visiting Colonial Beach Drifters in straight sets. The JV girls started off the evening, falling to the Drifters two sets to one. Then, the energy that Mathews had was indescribable; nothing Colonial Beach could do to bring them down. Between strong serves, many kills, and strong communication, Mathews swept the match, winning the second and third sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-16. Top servers for Mathews were Carter Hayes, with six aces, and Bentlea Lawrence, with five. Hailey Love collected 21 assists and Lawrence had 13 kills. Kate Small also had two solo blocks.
