The Rev. Dr. Paul Hogg Jr., affectionally known as Peter, passed away on August 13, 2026. A native of Tidewater, Va., Peter grew up in the Hilton Village of Newport News. An esteemed alumnus of Woodberry Forest, he subsequently obtained his undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1969. After finishing his undergraduate studies, he became an English teacher at Virginia State Penitentiary in Richmond, Va. While there, he began to explore a call that was leading him toward ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. He successfully completed a Master of Divinity degree at Virginia Theological Seminary in 1974, with his ordination the same year. Additionally, he earned a Doctor of Ministry from Virginia Theological Seminary in 1991.
Reverend Hogg spent the next 50 years as an ordained priest and dedicated his ministry to serving parishes within the Diocese of Southern Virginia and the Diocese of Virginia, with an additional period of service in North Carolina. He commenced his rectorship at St. David’s and Our Savior in Chesterfield, Va. Subsequently, he accepted a call to St. Aidan’s in Virginia Beach, where he served for 26 years. Following his retirement, he pursued further education in interim ministry training. His interim assignments included St. Martin’s, Williamsburg; St. Paul, Richmond; Trinity, Portsmouth; Christ Church, Raleigh, N.C.; Grace, The Plains; St. John’s, Hampton; St. John’s, Warsaw; and Farnham Church, Farnham, Va.
He served four terms in the House of Deputies of the General Convention of The Episcopal Church, in addition to his contributions to various committees and boards within the Diocese of Southern Virginia. Following the Vietnam War, he established the Singles Ministry within the Diocese of Southern Virginia. He was the author of “Empowerment for Ministry: Developing Lay Pastoral Caregivers.”
Peter was a man of deep faith who viewed the world with purpose, good humor, and wide-eyed wonder. He loved his life and grabbed it with both hands. A life that he devoted wholeheartedly to his family and to the service of others. Widely known to be passionate about all dogs, he loved woodworking and creating with his hands. He possessed a profound affinity for the Chesapeake Bay, the York River, and other rivers traversing Virginia. The day he was no longer able to embark on his boat marked a somber occasion.
Another lifelong passion of his was leading pilgrims, including his family, on trips to over 23 different countries. As a man in constant motion, he was always doing, discerning, learning, laughing, and loving, but never leaving anyone behind. In the end, we can see that God blessed us with an incredible husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend who will be eternally missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Paul Hogg and Dorothy Elizabeth Williams Hogg; his son, Peter Samuel Hogg; his brother, Dr. John Roger Hogg; his sister, Rebecca Lynn Hogg Sherman and her husband Woodward M. Sherman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Toni Chiesa Hogg; his son, the Rev. John Edwin Hogg and his wife Dr. Cameron Williard Hogg, and their two children, Peter Sidney and Silas Williard Hogg, and his sister-in-law, Dr. Carol Campbell Hogg.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Abingdon Episcopal Church, 4645 George Washington Memorial Highway, Gloucester, Va. 23061, conducted by the Rt. Rev. Edwin “Ted” Gulick and the Rev. Sven vanBaars. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.
