Harper’s Barber Shop opens in Mathews

Harper’s Barber Shop, owned by Gwynn’s Island residents Danny and Tracy Harper, opened recently at 182 Main Street in Mathews, offering haircuts, skin fades, high and tights, beard trims, and traditional hot towel shaves. The two-chair shop is decorated in a Chesapeake Bay/Mathews theme, with local art and photos featuring boats and watermen and scenes of Mathews from the past. One wall is covered in siding from an old barn from down in Susan, while another holds hand-crafted wooden U.S. flags representing each branch of military service, plus police officers and first responders. A circa 1905 barber’s chair that belonged to Phyllis Buchanan’s father, Kearney Davis, sits in the same corner of the building where Buchanan sat for years while working for Mathews Insurance Agency.
