The Mathews Outdoor Club held its annual Wharf to Wharf Open Water Swim at Williams Wharf Landing along the East River on Saturday, welcoming more than 60 swimmers to the one-mile open water swim event. Participants traveled from across Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania to participate in the event, which was well attended by local athletes from Mathews, Gloucester, Middlesex and Lancaster counties. Swimmers from age 10 to 78 took part. Chase Miller of King George claimed first place with a time of 24:21, followed closely by Annabella Carter of Charlotte, North Carolina, in second place with a time of 25:19 and Lazarus Doiron of Wake in third at 25:43. The Virginia Marine Police and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary were present to manage boat traffic until all swimmers cleared the course.
