Eight members of Gloucester 4-H spent two days last week exploring agriculture and career opportunities as part of On the Farm Day Camp. The group visited Virginia State University on the first day where Rachel Lawmaster provided a tour. Campers explored hydroponics and aquaponics, examined water samples, visited demonstration gardens and learned about composting, all while discovering various career options. On the second day, campers visited Thru God’s Grace Farm in Saluda, where owner Rebecca Gibson shared her passion for animals and the importance of raising a sustainable food source. The group also traveled to Sandy Creek Pet Resort at James Store, where owner Donna Hall discussed her dedication to rescuing livestock, including donkeys, alpacas, mini horses and goats. After lunch and exploring the gardens at Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, Gloucester, the campers visited Merryvale Farms in Deltaville to learn about raised bed plasticulture.
