In celebration of National Lighthouse Day, which is Friday, Aug. 7, an exhibit titled “Night Sentinels: Lighthouses of Mathews County” opened today on the balcony of Mathews Memorial Library. It will continue through Aug. 31. The exhibit tells the story of the New Point Comfort Lighthouse and the Wolf Trap Light Station, tracing their histories through interpretive panels featuring original plans, old photographs, and photographs of their present-day condition.Additionally, a commemorative plate featuring the New Point Comfort Lighthouse and the keeper’s house, along with a watercolor print of Wolf Trap by William Langley Deagle from the Mathews Archives, will be displayed. Mathews Archives is a collaboration between Mathews Memorial Library and the Mathews County Historical Society.
