While most students are enjoying time off from school during summer break, a dedicated group of Mathews High School musicians is working hard to get ready for the upcoming performance season. The first week of MHS Band Camp was held this past week, with approximately 48 students spending the mornings practicing their routines both in the classroom and on the field, under the guidance of MHS band and orchestra director Mark Givens. Leading this year’s ensemble are Drum Major Jordan Sadeg and Field Commanders Hunter Owens and Bella Hockenberry. Sadeg, a rising senior, has served as Drum Major for the past three years, overseeing the entire ensemble from her perch at the podium. “She’s been a big contributor to the program,” Givens said. Owens, another rising senior, and Hockenberry, a rising junior, meanwhile oversee operations on the field, playing instruments in the band, as well as serving as Field Commanders.
