Sentara Health issues formal notice to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield

Sentara Health, Virginia’s leading not-for-profit integrated health care system, provided Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Virginia on Friday with a formal notice of its intent to allow certain commercial, Medicare and Medicaid agreements to expire if a new agreement cannot be reached. In the notification letter to Anthem, Sentara reaffirmed its commitment to continue negotiating toward a resolution that keeps nearly 380,000 Anthem members in the Virginia in-network. Providing formal notice of termination is a standard contractual step—one that does not preclude either party from reaching a fair agreement, a Sentara release stated. The notification follows more than eight months of negotiations during which Sentara claims that Anthem has been unwilling to agree to rates that support the delivery of high-quality care to Virginians.
