Tryouts will be held next week for the Mathews High School volleyball and cross country fall sports. Volleyball tryouts begin Monday and continue through Friday. The JV tryouts will be held from 3-5 p.m. and the varsity from 5-8 p.m., all at the MHS gym. Teams will be selected by the end of the week, according to coach Pat Moughon. Once teams are selected, practices will continue at those times until school starts. Once school opens, practices will be after school, and volleyball contests will start with a scrimmage at Gloucester on Aug. 17 and a pre-season jamboree on Aug. 22. Also, the volleyball team is looking for statisticians to help keep stats at practices and games. In this role, you would be a part of the team and be included in all events and perks, said Moughon.
