Although summer break is here, the Mathews County Public School system is hard at work, getting ready for the start of classes, which is coming up on Aug. 24. The school division is in the process of turning from three schools into two, with sixth and seventh grades falling under the umbrella of Mathews Elementary. Superintendent of Schools Dr. David S. Daniel, speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting, which was held in the historic courthouse, said that MES principal Lee Ann Bray and her staff are fine tuning student schedules for 2026-2027. Normally, he said, the class lists and home room assignments are publicized a week or so before open house, but they won’t be released until open house, which will be held on Aug. 20. Right now, kindergarten registration is at 37, which Daniel said is rather low. He encouraged parents to get their students registered as soon as possible.
