14-year-old dies in minibike accident in Gloucester

A 14-year-old is dead and a 16-year-old sustained serious life-threatening injuries following a crash involving a minibike on Monday night in Hayes. At approximately 10 p.m., the Virginia State Police responded to the minibike crash near Ambrose Road and Michael Lane, according to Victoria Varnedoe, VSP Public Relations Coordinator for Division 5. Varnedoe said the preliminary investigation indicates a minibike ran off the road striking a mailbox. The operator, the 16-year-old, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. The 14-year-old passenger sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The incident remains under investigation. Varnedoe declined to release the name of the juveniles, citing state law, adding that the next of kin of the juvenile who died has been notified.
