The Virginia Department of Historic Resources states that Gwynn’s Island has 1,425 acres. Contemporary historians of 1776 said it had 2,000+ acres, which included the 1,000-acre plantation of John Randolph Grymes, a loyalist.
Our questions: Is either figure correct? Are both figures correct? Has erosion destroyed so much soil, more than 500 acres, in the intervening 250 years? Has no one noticed this distressing loss?
Erosion of our local shorelines is steadily occurring and the remedies, so far, are piecemeal, one piece of property at a time, and not always effective. Our final question: Can this trend ever be reversed?...
