BETTY SIMMS HAYES

Betty Simms Hayes, 97, died at home on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, George R. Hayes (2018), their son, Rod Hayes (2022), her two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her daughter, Claire Brant (Robert); son, Paul Hayes; daughter-in-law, Betty U. Hayes; five grandsons; 10 great-grandchildren, and her beloved nieces and nephews.

Betty was born in 1929 to Paul and Eula Simms in Franklin County, Virginia. She attended Virginia Intermont College and completed her studies at Mary Washington College. In 1950 she came to teach fifth grade at Achilles Elementary School. There she met George, a Gloucester native (and no, he was not her student).

Betty devoted her life to caring for and supporting George, their children, extended family and friends. She was an avid reader, enthusiastic bird-watcher, and loved to play cards. She had a passion for bridge and enjoyed her weekly games for decades. We will remember Betty for her humor, her wise and witty words and, especially toward the end, her plucky spirit. Bee will be missed immensely; she leaves a void that cannot be filled.

Our family thanks the staff of Riverside Hospice, with special appreciation to Amber and Heather for their compassion, skill and kindness. We invite family and friends to join us for a reception on Saturday, August 1, noon, at Abingdon Episcopal Church in the parish house. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, Va. 23061 or Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 9, Bena, Va. 23018.
